Costco Wholesale is committed to environmental protection and safety in all aspects of our fuel business. Our business philosophy emphasises long-term trust relationships with our members and employees, who all live and work in the communities we serve. To protect these communities, we follow strict safety procedures designed to prevent any harm to the environment or our valued members.
Certified Costco fuel attendants
To support our focus on the environment and safety, we employ trained fuel attendants to oversee day to day operations. Attendants must pass a certification test before they can work at a Costco fuel station. You’ll find them at the fuel islands, ready to respond immediately to any safety or environmental issues.
Continuous leak monitoring
All Costco fuel stations have corrosion proof, double-wall storage tanks and piping located underground. This equipment is continuously monitored for leaks via an electronic monitoring system, so the entire station will automatically shut down if a leak is detected. These electronic alarm systems are monitored around the clock by our employees and an outside service.
Air pollution control
Our fuel stations are fitted with vapour recovery systems that help prevent released vapour from escaping and polluting the atmosphere. Although these systems significantly add to our costs, we believe that investing in long term environmental sustainability is crucial to our business ethics. To support this, Costco works with various government agencies to stay at the forefront of air pollution control efforts
Spill cleanup program
The best equipment and practices in the world won’t prevent the occasional surface spill. Spilled fuel is a safety and environmental concern, so we keep spill kits on the fuel islands and we train our fuel station attendants how to clean surface spills properly.
Safety
The trained fuel attendants at our stations ensure that you’re always safe when filling up. Our employees are there to help whether you need assistance using our equipment or have any other questions and concerns. They’re also there to enforce New Zealand’s laws and regulations, including prohibitions against smoking, leaving the engine running, and checking you’re using the correct portable fuel containers.
Deposit control additives are the main points of difference between fuel brands. Our Kirkland Signature Fuels include additives designed to minimise engine deposits that are harmful to a vehicle’s performance and emissions. All Costco fuels contain deposit control additives that have been tested and are proven to have positive effects on your vehicle’s engine performance.
